The Petersham Center School is the only elementary school serving the town of Petersham. The original brick and cedar building has stood in the town since 1906, with two additions, one being a full-sized gymnasium.

The enrollment in the school usually averages just under one hundred students who are from grades Kindergarten through sixth grade. The student to teacher ratio is therefore quite low, allowing excellent focus on the individual student.

There is a half-day Kindergarten, and team-teaching at all other grade levels. This multi-age grouping of students allows sharing and teaching among the students themselves as well as respect for the other grade levels. The school also provides specialist teachers for physical education, art, music and special needs.

The Achievement tests and MEAP scores continue to indicate the high level of academic achievement among Petersham students. Students who graduate from the Petersham Center School move on to Mahar Regional for secondary school.
