- Automatic astrophysical component detection and modeling
- Abstract: Modern observatories deliver increasingly detailed observations across multiple wavelengths, calling for principled data-analysis methods that can disentangle complex astrophysical signals. In this talk, I will present a new multi-frequency Bayesian model of the sky emission field that enables automated separation of diffuse, point-like, and extended components in noisy, instrumentally distorted data. The method leverages latent-space tension as a quantitative indicator of model misspecification, guiding when and how new sky components should be introduced. I will demonstrate its performance on synthetic multi-band imaging data and on eROSITA X-ray observations of the SN1987A region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The approach provides accurate component reconstructions, sub-pixel localization of point sources, and robust uncertainty quantification -- offering a general framework for next-generation multi-wavelength and multi-messenger surveys.

- Solar Flare Statistics Don't Follow Poisson: Overdispersion from Overlapping Active Regions
- Abstract: We challenge the Poisson assumption for solar flare occurrences and find significant overdispersion in GOES flare data spanning cycle 23-25, even within rate-stationary intervals identified by Bayesian Blocks. Analysis of individual active regions reveals that waiting time distributions depart from exponential behavior in approximately half of the regions studied. We identify a natural statistical cause for the overdispersion: the aggregation of flares from multiple contemporaneous active regions, each with possibly distinct flaring rates. Our statistical models quantifies this overdispersion and demonstrates that naive Poisson assumptions systematically underestimate uncertainties in flare statistics, with potential impacts on downstream analysis.
