The AstroStat Slog » discontinuation http://hea-www.harvard.edu/AstroStat/slog Weaving together Astronomy+Statistics+Computer Science+Engineering+Intrumentation, far beyond the growing borders Fri, 09 Sep 2011 17:05:33 +0000 en-US hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.4 Discontinuation of weekly [arXiv] series http://hea-www.harvard.edu/AstroStat/slog/2008/discontinuation-of-weekly-arxiv-series/ http://hea-www.harvard.edu/AstroStat/slog/2008/discontinuation-of-weekly-arxiv-series/#comments Sun, 22 Jun 2008 03:50:35 +0000 hlee http://hea-www.harvard.edu/AstroStat/slog/?p=196 Now it’s time for me to write my own astrostat papers instead of spending time for sieving them from [arXiv]. It has been an irresistible temptation scanning daily [arXiv] preprints to look for astronomy and sometimes statistics papers that 1. adopt statistics, 2. contain statistically challenging problems, 3. could be improved by more rigorous statistical applications, 4. look like abusing statistics, 5. may inspire statisticians by the data sets, or 6. might be useful for astronomers’ advancement in the data analysis. The temptation grew too much to be handled. The amount of papers belong to the above selection criteria seems to grow as my understanding widens. Also the mesh gets loose and starts to show holes.

On top of growing numbers in statistics friendly astronomy papers in [arXiv], the fact that the sloggers know how to subscribe [arXiv] in addition to finding their research related papers of any subjects with the help of many powerful search engines eventually made me decide to terminate my temptation without any guilt. Over the past year, [arXiv] has given enough flavor how astronomy and statistics can unify and advance together.

Instead of sieving hundreds papers while meshes get loose, the light statistics papers that may serve as tutorials for astronomers will be on the way. Some statistic text books will be included. Topic specific short reviews or introductions of papers from both fields will replace my current temptation. I hope to see your opinions and contributions in the future as well as your reviews on the papers of your interests in the slog.

Lastly, I point a slog posting about how to subscribe [arXiv].
