The AAS Working Group on Astroinformatics and Astrostatistics (WGAA) was established at the 220th AAS Meeting (June 2012, Anchorage) in response to a White Paper report submitted to the Astro2010 Decadal Survey. Since then, the Working Group has been developing and spreading awareness of the applications of advanced computer science, statistics and allied branches of applied mathematics to further the goals of astronomical and astrophysical research.
This Splinter Meeting will review the status of the WGAA, communicate the WGAA activities to the community, and discuss future challenges and goals related to the fields of Astrostatistics & Astroinformatics.
The session will start with presentations of two White Papers that were submitted by the WGAA to Astro2020 Decadal:
Following these presentations, the session will move into a moderated, open discussion, and solicitation of ideas about future directions and goals for the Working Group, and a possibility of becoming a new division.
Moderator: Gwendolyne Eadie (co-chair of the WGAA Steering Committee, University of Toronto)
