ChaMPlane Observation: MMT 6.5m/Blue
ChannelDecember 1-4, 2002
The astronomical
twilights on Januasry 1 (19:00:04 - 6:00:04) and 2 (19:00:45 -
6:00:19) have duration of 11:00 hours. ChaMPlane targets are
observable until just before 4AM (A0620 field). So at about 4AM,
switch to XTEJ1118+480 and observe it continuously.

CCD Binning
The Blue-Channel CCD (ccd22) has 3072x1024 pixels. Use the column/row
range of [1:3072,201:712] with the [1,2] binning (i.e. bin the CCD by
a factor of two in the spatial direction). This gives a spatial image
scale of 0.6 arcsec/pixel. So the data image has 3072x256 pixels.
Biases and Flats
Do 15 Biases and 15 Bright Lamp Flats (15sec each) in the afternoon for
each grating.
Observing
For brighter ChaMPlane targets, one short (depends on the brightness)
exposure is good enough. For faint ChaMPlane targets, take 3x20min or
3x30min exposures. Remember to take a HeNeAr comparison lamp after
each exposure.
For XTE J1118+480, take one HeNeAr comparison lamp after every two
15min exposures continuously.
Flux Standard
Take a couple of flux standards each night. There is a list of flux
standards in the operators computer. This can be done in the evening
or morning twilight.
Elevation Chart
Here is an observing elevation chart showing the locus of targets
during the night. Horizontal axis is the time in hours. Space
between two gray bars are the astronomical twilight zone. Vertical
axis is the distance of the object above horizon in 10-degrees. From
left to right are B2224, J2227, J0422, 3C123, G166, A0620, J1118.

XTE J1118+480 is a X-ray Nova containing a black hole of more than 6 solar mass. This observation aims to obtain
its time resolved H-alpha profile.
Using the 832g/mm (1st order) grating with central wavelength at 5900A
and blocking filter UV-36, observe J1118+480 continuously each night
starting at 4AM. Do: 2x15min exposures + henear (30sec) + 2x15min
exposures + henear (30sec) +...

inside the red circle near the center.
