ChaMPlane Observation with CTIO 4m Hydra

May 10-15, 2007

I. Target Fields

Target Fields are from the 19 Mosaic fields taken in 2004 and 2005 at CTIO/4m. Table 1 lists these target fields sortted by RA. (Not all the Hydra setups are ready at this moment.)

II. Hydra Setup Files

Table 2 lists the Hydra setup files. For each field, there are bright setups (R < 20) and faint setups (R => 20). Our data show that hydra is only effective for objects with R < 20. So we only observe bright setups in this run. For most of the fields, only observe the first bright setup. The faint setups are only listed here for reference. Only observe those with more than 20 objects in the hydra file. Priorities are given in the order of number of objects in the setup.

III. Exposure Sequence

Take 3x40min exposures for each bright setup. Table 3 lists the exposure sequence for each setup, including setup fibers, acquire field and take comparison lamp. The total time needed for each bright setup is 2hr40m.

-----------------------------------------------------
There are a few setups for very bright stars (R<~12). These stars are removed from the bright setups to prevent saturation and contaminating neighboring spectra. When the weather is bad and no good spectra can be taken for bright setups, take those very bright setups with a single 15min exposure. The total time needed for each very bright setup is 45min (assuming field acquisition has been done for the bright setups).

IV. Observation Plan

Here is an observing elevation chart showing the locus of the 19 target fields. Space between the two vertical dashed lines is the astronomical twilight zone.

postscript and CTIO 2007 May Ephemeris Xavier's Hydra Guide hydra-usermanual

Astronomical twilight: 19:25 - 5:55 duration 10h30m
Do four bright setups each night: 4 x 160min = 640m = 10h40m - 20m(first hydra setup) = 10h20m

V. Flux Standard

Take flux standards every night. To take the standard, move one fiber to the exact center, then point the telescope at the flux standard and take a spectrum. Remember to take a comparison spectrum after each standard taken.
