The Diffuse X-ray Spectrometer (DXS) instruments were flown as attached payload on the STS-54 mission of the Space Shuttle Endeavour in January of 1993. The DXS's main scientific goal was to obtain spectra of the diffuse soft X-ray background.

The DXS project yielded the first direct evidence that there is very hot gas in the interstellar medium near the solar system and obtained the first-ever spectra of the diffuse soft x-ray background in the energy band from 0.15 to 0.284 keV (wavelength 42 to 84 Angstroms). .

A more in-depth summary and further information can be found at Diffuse X-ray Spectrometer (DXS) Home Page
