SAO HEAD - Project JOVE Page

The field of high energy astrophysics encompasses some of the most energetic objects phenomena and processes in the universe. Astronomical research is directed toward understanding the mechanisms which generate X-radiation; studying the formation, evolution, and ultimate fate of stars and galaxies; and measuring the overall distribution of matter in the universe. Observations are made from balloons, rockets, and satellites, because X-rays are absorbed by the earth's atmosphere. Current research in the High Energy Astrophysics Division (HEAD) at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) includes analysis and interpretation of X-ray data, development of new data-analysis software, and design and construction of new instrumentation for future space science missions. As a Mentor Institution for NASA's Project JOVE, SAO offers research opportunities covering a wide range of astrophysics topics. SAO is a member of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and is located on the campus of Harvard University, in Cambridge, MA.
