Education and Outreach Alliance

Welcome to the on-line "headquarters" of the Education and Outreach Alliance. Our goal is to create a community of CfA employees who are interested, if not already participating, in educational outreach. We hope such an alliance will provide all of us with the support mechanisms we need to be involved in educational and outreach projects.

Please take a look below at what we can offer to the CfA community as resources for getting involved in educational outreach. Since the group itself is still under construction, so is its web presence. Keep checking in for updates to this site.

        • MEETINGS: Our meetings are opened for the entire CfA community. We are now comprised of members from each division and department. Our Alliance Minutes pages are updated after every meeting.

        • MAILING LIST: We have created a mailing list on head-cfa called "outreach_local" from which members can receive notice of upcoming meetings, school events, CfA visits, and developing projects, with the opportunity to join in on whatever level they feel capable. To join the list, simply email majordomo with the message body subscribe outreach_local . You will then begin to receive our news in your email inbox.

Until the archive of messages is operational, those of you with HEAD-LAN accounts can browse previous messages to "outreach_local" as follows:

        • NEWSLETTER: The Education Bulletin should be reaching you via your mailstop. If you have missed any, past issues of Education Bulletin can be accessed online. This monthly newsletter will provide you with deadlines of important education grants, spotlights on education projects around the CfA and a list of events occurring at the CfA or in other educational institutions. Please send your contributions for the Education Bulletin to Vinay Kashyap, vkashyap@head-cfa.harvard.edu by the last Monday of the month to be included in the next month's newsletter.

        • EMPLOYEE RESOURCES: We have been collecting information about the educational work presently being done by employees here at the CfA as well as the personal resources offered by employees who may not be presently involved in educational projects. The aim is to gather as much as possible and organize it here for quick access.

The educational projects underway at the CfA are listed in several places on the various CfA web pages. Here are the three major starting points for learning more about science education and outreach at the CfA:

          • Public Affairs and Publications

          • The Science Education Department

          • The High Energy Astrophysics Education and Outreach Home Page

          • Structure and Evolution of the Universe Education Forum

Our employee educational resource database is a chance for all interested CfA employees to register themselves as personal educational resources for needs such as school speaker, tour guide, technical editor, interested parent, slide changer, science education expert, teacher, photocopier, Girl Scout Troop Leader, writer, astrophotographer, excellent role model...you get the idea!

The CfA maintains a similar database of scientists' research work for undergraduates to use when looking for advisors and mentors, and the Division of Public Affairs has a table of CfA personnel willing to visit schools and includes the topics and age groups with which they are most comfortable. Eventually, we would like to combine the Public Affairs table with ours into one complete database.

Each entry in our database includes not only the person's resources, but also a contact phone number, office location, and immediate access to the email address. Clicking on a name in the database automatically brings up a window where you can type a message to that person.

To register yourself, please email us with your name and division, room number and phone number, and the resources you would like to offer. Soon this page will have a simple form for you to fill in with the same information.

Public Affairs maintains a WWW homepage to help document the outreach inquiries that reach the Public Affairs Office. This page links interested CfA employees to recent speaker requests which have come into the Public Affairs office. Please see http://cfa-www.harvard.edu/cfa/ep/outreach.html for more information.
