Please send comments and corrections to rsdc@cfa.harvard.edu, with subject line ``PUG''.

Users who are new to the IRAF environment may wish to try the ``ASSIST" which functions ``above" IRAF. The ASSIST is a graphical user interface to IRAF and other analysis environments under the X Window System. The ASSIST provides you with a convenient way to:

o traverse the IRAF package hierarchy, loading selected packages
o find and access tasks in the IRAF hierarchy, using keyword searches
o access often-used tasks directly without traversing the package tree
o inspect and change task parameters
o run tasks
o view task and package help files
o submit comments, questions, bug reports
o try out recipes and tutorials
o use a common graphical interface for IRAF and non-IRAF tasks

The ASSIST can be retrieved via anonymous ftp from sao-ftp.harvard.edu, in the ftp/pub/asc directory. The README.FIRST file in that directory describes the files that you might wish to retrieve. The README_ASSIST.BUILD file gives instructions for installing ASSIST, and should be read through before retrieving other files.

The ASSIST was developed at SAO by the HEAD Software R&D group in cooperation with the AXAF Science Center; it is not supported by the RSDC. The underlying Answer Garden system was developed by Mark Ackerman at MIT.
