XC01: HRMA & SI X-RAY CALIBRATION PLAN
Below is a summary of the XRCF X-Ray Calibration planning detailed in XC01
HRMA & SI PRE-CALIBRATION REHEARSALS
Three Pre-Calibration Rehearsals:
- HRMA (27JUL96 - 23AUG96)
- HRMA/SI (26AUG96 - 10OCT96)
- HRMA GSE Vacuum Infant Mortality Test (10OCT96 - 04NOV96)
GSE integration occurs before/during Pre-Calibration Rehearsals as reflected in detailed schedule
Pre-Cal Rehearsals Intended to Simulate Actual X-ray Calibration
- Performed in IC Vacuum
- Use same hardware to extent possible
- Uses same data acquisition hardware
- Dry run of procedures
- Check-out of manpower scheduling and loading
- Currently planned 24hr/dy, 7day/wk operation
- Personnel training
HRMA Pre-Cal Rehearsal
- Simulates Phase 1
- Uses TMA (plus TMA SS) & HXDS
- Missing HRMA GSE
HRMA/SI Pre-Cal Rehearsal
- Simulates Phase 2
- Uses TMA, FAM, FAM Cryoshroud, LASS-Z, ACIS-2C
HRMA GSE Vacuum Infant Mortality Test
- HRMA GSE Vacuum Check-Out
- Uses DSS
- Uses HSS, FCC, ACC & OTG Mechanisms, and HSS
- Uses no Optic and no Focal Plane Detector(TBR)
- Contractually directed by MSFC
HRMA & HRMA/SI CALIBRATION
Three Phases of HRMA/SI X-ray Calibration at the XRCF:
- Phase 0: HRMA Thermal Balance Testing (04NOV96 - 04DEC96)
- 16 IC Vacuum Days
- Phase 1: HRMA X-ray Calibration (04DEC96 - 17JAN97)
- 30 IC Vacuum Days
- Phase 2:HRMA/SI X-ray Calibration (17JAN97 - 16APR97)
- 60 IC Vacuum Days
24hr/dy, 7 dy/wk Operation
Phase 0: HRMA Thermal Balance Testing
- Uses Instrument Chamber(IC) LN2 Deep Space Simulator (DSS)
- Objectives:
- Verify flight operation of HRMA Thermal Control System(TCS)
- Determine HRMA set-point and power requirements under nominal, min, & max telescope thermal conditions
- Determine HRMA TCS capability to counteract in-spec (2.5oF) telescope diametrical gradients
- HRMA survival TCS check-out
- Collect HRMA x-ray imaging performance data under non-optimal 1-g off-loading conditions to verify HRMA performance model predictions
- X-rays collected using HRMA X-ray Detector Assembly (HXDA)
- Includes use of HRMA shutters to measure P/H tilt
- Does not include OTG's
Phase 1: HRMA X-ray Calibration
- Performed without DSS (entire IC maintained at telescope nominal 50oF)
- Objectives:
- Verify HRMA x-ray performance model (i.e. response function) so that on-orbit performance can be predicted to within 1% goal
- Model needed to predict imaging (e.g. absolute EE, PRF), and spectroscopic(e.g. energy scale, efficiency, PRF) on-orbit performance from ground measurements
- Determine model parameters in an overdetermined manner
- X-rays collected using HXDA and Beam Normalization Detectors (BND)
- Uses multiple x-ray source types to provide calibration over required energy and resolution range
- Includes OTG's
Phase 2: HRMA/FPSI/OTG X-ray Calibration
- Performed without DSS (entire IC maintained at telescope nominal 50oF)
- Objectives:
- Verify FPSI response functions so that on-orbit performance can be predicted
- Model needed to predict imaging (e.g. absolute EE, PRF), and spectroscopic(e.g. energy scale, efficiency, PRF) on-orbit performance from ground measurements
- Determine model parameters in an overdetermined manner
- X-rays collected using FPSI's and BND
- FPSI's supported in flight Integrated Science Instrument Model (ISIM) [TBR]
- ISIM supported by Five Axis Mount which simulates observatory operation in "telescope mode" (i.e. off-axis data collection)
- ISIM exposed to LN2 cryoshroud which enables ACIS to reach operating temperature and sinks waste heat
- Uses multiple x-ray source types to provide calibration over required energy and resolution range
- Includes OTG's
