- 01/16/96 Shutter in shell 3 north quadrant beginning to show trouble.
Occaisionally responds to "open" command only after several attempts,
but it does respond.
- 01/15/97 1500 CST: Change from C target to Mg target.

- 01/09/97 0155 CST: Change from Al target to Fe target.
- 01/01/97 0100 CST: alignment measurements complete, HRMA aligned with
x-rays to IAP-3.
- 12/31/96 0600 CST: Right rear actuator jams, left rear actuator lowered
to match, calibration continues with Al anode. HRMA aligned at IAP-2 using
telescope.
- 12/31/96 9:30 am CST: HRMA contamination covers opened.
- 12/30/96 Pumpdown begins for HRMA / HETG / LETG / HXDS (Phase 1 part
II) calibration.
- 12/29/96 Vertical actuators installed, shutter actuators lubricated.
- 12/24/96 8 am: repress underway.
- 12/24/96 7 am: shutters performed less well at 65 degrees.
- 12/23/96 5 am: shutter test at 50 degrees shows some shutters moving
slower on progressive iterations. Chamber will be warmed to 65 degrees
for repeat of test. OTG & cover actuators working well.
- 12/22/96 11 pm: LETG first light.
- 12/22/96 10 pm: HETG first light.
- 12/21/96 shutters proving to be sticky and problematic, particularly
shell 3 bottom.
- 12/20/96 2:40 am: HRMA first light. Detailed analysis awaits,
but qualitatively, the optics look great. Low scattering indicates optics
are clean, images nice and round, offloaders appear to be working very
well, image taken after a rough focus is nice and tight.
- 12/19/96 10pm: Pumpdown went quickly, making background and other fiducial
measurements while allowing time for thermalization and further chamber
evacuation prior to HRMA exposure.
- 12/19/96 8:20 am: Pumpdown begins for HRMA / HETG / LETG / HXDS (Phase
1) calibration.
- 12/18/96 5:30 pm: Expect pumpdown at 7 am Thursday, 12/19. Dome is
going on now. Kodak has secondary thermal system operational, primary system
data will be analyzed during this short vacuum period. Remaining work included
exposure of gratings and final chamber closeout (IC door thermistor connections
and contamination monitors).
- 12/17/96 8pm: Smallest actuators on HRMA shutters are fully exposed,
definately lubricated with only good tribolube. Largest actuators definately
bad, though they did pass 1238. Best combination of cleaning and re-bake
under discussion. Medium sized actuators which control HRMA horizontal
motion, contamination covers, and OTGs, under some suspicion. Spare actuator
in this size checked, lube sample taken, found to be good tribolube. All
installed actuators are cleared for pumpdown. Pumpdown further delayed
24 hours by intstallion of shim on OTG brackets and delayed indefinitely
by shakeout of HRMA thermistor and thermal panel wiring.
- 12/16/96 8pm: During checkout of vertical actuator with broken gearbox,
hydrocarbon oil was found. All vertical actuators will be removed and cleaned,
during this time, a short calibration will be run, with only on-axis measurements.
The HRMA will be aligned and fixed on-axis.
- 12/16/96 8am: EKC has replaced all actuators one by one. Front actuator,
which drives theta-Y, most valuable for calibration, entirely replaced
with spare actuator.
- 12/15/96 5 pm HRMA & HXDS rolled back out, worst (suspected broken)
actuator removed. Gearbox was broken, probably cause insufficient lubricant
left after bakeout.
- 12/14/96: SAO competed aperture map, EKC testing thermistors and actuators.
Noisy actuators discovered, one probably damaged.
- 12/13/96 1pm: HXDS rolled into IC.
- 12/13/96 10 am: HRMA rolled into IC.
- 12/13/96 2am: HRMA contamination covers briefly opened to allow HRMA
alignment under only the forces it will see during caibration.
- 12/12/96 8 am: HRMA 1-g offloaders installed. Thermistor cables installed.
- 12/11/96 HETG aligned, offloader installation nearing completion.
- 12/10/96 3:30 am: HETG installed. Offloader installation ongoing.
- 12/09/96 4am: LETG installed.
- 12/08/96 6am: HRMA aft door aligned, both doors attached to contamination
covers. Offloader arm installation underway.
- 12/07/96 6am: HRMA aft door proving difficult to align to aft contamination
cover. Offloader brackets interfering with pins on ring used by alignment
tower offloader. Clearance holes being machined in brackets.
- 12/06/96 6am CST: HRMA fore and aft structures on HSS, forward door
aligned to forward contamination cover, HETG meachanism aligned.
- 12/05/96 Noon CST: HRMA on Source-End Test Bench.
- 12/04/96 HRMA ARM and radiation contamination sources installed. HRMA
thermal plug fit problem identified.
- 12/0296 HRMA in 2k cleanroom, on HSS.
- 12/01/96 6am CST: HRMA in 10k cleanroom.
- 11/30/96 2pm CST: HRMA lands at Redstone Arsenal

- 11/01/96 0400 HXDS Verification ends. SSD pinholes proved difficult
to find, but efficiencies were higher than expected and we finished with
all priority-10 and some lower priority measurements completed. Remaining
hours were turned over to SSL for beam maps and other testing.
- 10/28/96 1300 HXDS Verification begins.
- 10/27/96 HSI MCP plates failed. HSI offline for remainder of this phase.
- 10/22/96 1700: HXDS software checkout begins.
- 10/21/96 Pumpdown initiated for HXDS checkout and Verification.
- 10/21/96 HRMA Support Structure built up on test bench in cleanroom.
- 10/17/96 Phase II Lessons Learned meeting.
- 10/16/96 HXDS preparation ongoing. New laser improves interferometry

- 10/15/96 BTWGS load tested. EKC beginning HSS buildup. HXDS preparation
ongoing.
- 10/11/96 TMA baffle aligned. HXDS preparation ongoing.
- 10/10/96 HXDS in IC. Preparation for re-Verification ongoing.
- 10/09/96 FAM and LASS-Z down from SETB. Guide tube densing sheild rounded.
- 10/07/96 1730UT: IC begins repressurization.
- 10/04/96 FAM settle time tested with stair/step pattern.. FAM showed
negligable settle time.
- 10/02/96 0700UT Phase 2 Rehearsal resumed.
- 10/01/96 2300 UT: 9/30's FAM problems caused a cable to restrict y-axis
motion. A vacuum break was declared. Today, the cable was re-dressed, and
in addition, the FAM encoder lights were blocked so that the FAM could
be left on without leaking light to the ACIS-2C. An ACIS-2C nitorgen leak
was also repaired; this leak caused the chamber to run at a vacuum level
about an order of magnitude higher than usual.
- 09/30/96, 1200UT: Spent last 12 hours checking out ACIS-2C and HXDS
with EIPS/Al-K source. HXDS BND-H Z stage still stalling under vacuum,
but sucessfully took beam map. Preparation with ACIS-2C included light
leak search, found that FAM encoders were a problematic light source. This
means shutting the FAM down and zero'ing encoders to reduce background
for each measurement.
- 09/29/96 Pumpdown initiated for Phase 2 Rehearsal. TRW

- 09/28/96 ACIS-2C on LASS-Z, on FAM, in the IC, & aligned with TMA.
Dome is closed.
- 09/26/96 ACIS-2C problems solved; chips and electronics replaced. Phase
2R now 9/30-10/5.
- 09/25/96 HRMA Dry Run completed. ACIS-2C debugging continues. BTWGS
IC hardware cleaned for re-bake.
- 09/24/96 HRMA lifting fixture attached to HRMA Simulator. BTWGS failed
bakeout.
- 09/23/96 HRMA dry run: S/C cover removed. ACIS-2C removed from LASS-Z
for troubleshooting.
- 09/20/96 ACIS-2C electronic problems discovered.
- 09/18/96 Phase 1R Lessons Learned meeting. FAM/LASS-Z pass ACIS-2C
load test.
- 09/13/96 HRMA S/C in 10k cleanroom. BTWGS fit check completed.
