The X Public Access Mechanism

The X Public Access mechanism (XPA) is a layered interface built on top of the Xt selection interface, which allows an Xt program to define points of public access through which data and commands can be exchanged with external programs. Developed by Eric Mandel and Ralph Swick, XPA contains function libraries as well as high-level user programs built on top of these libraries. XPA public access points perform essentially the same function as pushbutton or menu widgets, which execute callbacks when activated. They have been used extensively to support cooperation between processes.

XPA has been used to develop SAOimage: The Next Generation as well as The ASSIST: A Uniform Interface to Software and Information.

The XPA mechanism is available as part of the SAO R&D software suite, which can be retrieved here.
