The ASSIST: A Uniform Interface to Software and Information

The ASSIST implements a uniform graphical interface to software and information for the X Window System. Developed by Eric Mandel and Mark S. Ackerman, it supports the creation, organization, and management of arbitrary 'information node types' such as documentation, help, tutorials, questions and answers, etc. The ASSIST also can manage and control analysis systems and programs such as IRAF and SAOtng. The newest release of ASSIST supports a World Wide Web node to provide asynchronous retrieval and display of Web documents. It also uses the X Public Access mechanism to communicate with other processes.

The current release of ASSIST is available as part of the SAO R&D software suite, which can be retrieved here. The ASSIST is being developed with funding from NASA's Applied Information Systems Research Program.
