Quasars

Hubble Space Telescope's image of a quasar and a few spaces above it a near by star. The fuzzy object on the top is a galaxy. All objects are billions of light years away from each other. Artists conception of a quasar
The yellow bands are jets of light emitted at very high wavelengths usually x-rays. Scientists beleive that Quasars are located in galaxies that have black holes! They believe that the black holes provide the Quasar with its intense energy and light.

Diagram of the evolution of Quasars
When the universe was small objects collided into each other more frequently. Therefore the density of Quasars was higher in the past. Now that the universe has grown the density of Quasars has decreased. Quasars are the most distant objects; their light has taken millions and millions of years to travel toward us. So we are really learning about the past, today.
